Recomposition

Another attempt of 420EX Speedlite. Can you see two sparkles in Matt's eyes? One is from the reflector (silver color) and the other one is from my speedlite (flash). I lost focus a bit as I locked focus and then recomposed. I heard that recomposition while using speedlite should be avoided. Is it true? And perhaps you can leave some comments here so that I can improve my flash photography skill. Thanks for reading :-)

Canon 420EX

I just bought a used Canon 420EX Speedlite and did a bit of experiment with Marge Simpsons’s figure. Here they are:

Picture 1: I rotated the 420EX (without diffuser) 45 degree to the right in order to bounce its light with the wall. EXIF: 1/80 sec, F/3.2, ISO 800, Av mode, EV+1.3.

Picture 2: I fired 420EX directly (again, without diffuser) at Marge Simpsons. EXIF: 1/80 sec, F/3.2, ISO 800, Av mode, EV+1.3

Picture 3: Pop-up flash. EXIF: 1/160 sec, F/3.2, ISO 800, Av mode, EV+0.3

Picture 4: No flash at all. EXIF: 1/60 sec, F/3.2, ISO 800, Av mode, EV+0.7

All photos were taken with Canon 350d & 50mm 1.8 lens, with Av mode, F/3.2, and ISO 800. I only resized and sharpened these photos. I guess my purpose here is trying to get the best result by controlling a few things (Av, aperture, ISO). Personally I like the first photo the most as the bouncing flash has brightened Marge’s shadow areas nicely, while the second photo on the other hand still has a bit of shadow on Marge's left arm. The shadow has been significantly reduced with pop-up flash in the third photo however I think Marge’s face is a bit too harsh. The fourth photo has got a strong shadow and the shutter speed is also slow (1/60).

I should also mention the available light sources are the ceiling light and desk lamp. A desk lamp plays a key role here from the back of Marge’s body and creates shadow accordingly. I guess the first photo could have been better if I use reflector or tilt the speedlite downward (perhaps with vertical shooting).

Well, so this is my very first try of 420EX. There’re a lot to learn. Also, pardon me for my poor use of these terminologies. There’re a lot of reviews & techniques on Canon speedlite out there on the internet though. By the way, I have never written my blog this long before (wow!), but I think it’s good that I do this kind of testing once in a while.

Gold Coast at night

A night view of Gold Coast, taken from the 77th floor of the Q1 Tower. It was around 6.30pm at that time. Because of the 30-seconds exposure that I used, the result was a dark blue sky. Somehow I didnt really like that so I desaturate the blue color and here is the final result. Taken with Canon 350d & 17-40L.

This is my second attempt of taking portrait shots with a reflector. The sunset was on her left hand side and that's why you can see a shine on her hair. Then I brightened her face a bit (or was it too bright?) with the wonderful reflector which is extremely useful for outdoor portrait like this.

I found that, with adequate light, the 17-40L lens can generate a very nice color for indoor shots. Normally I would use 50mm 1.8 lens for indoor but sometimes it's not wide enough. So 17-40L is really helpful here (again, if you have enough light).

About this photo: A customer in the brand-new Asian grocery store in Brisbane's sunnybank area. Taken with 17-40L @ 17mm and that's why you will be able to notice a bit of distortion in the ceiling.

Although I have been taking quite a lot of portraits already, it's still hard to take a photo in a low light condition (like this shot). With a speedlite, which I'm trying to get one, I hope it will be a great help in this kind of situation.

Jacaranda

Yesterday I went to Brisbane with Dr Ifti and Vicky. Ifty uses Canon 30D while Vicky uses Nikon D70. We took a few photos from The University of Queensland - St Lucia campus. The Jacaranda trees are so beautiful there and I can almost see its purple color everywhere on campus. However it was very cloudy yesterday which makes it difficult for outdoor shot like this. Reflector

Vicky bought a reflector from China so we tried it with a few portrait shooting yesterday. Here is Sammi. Can you notice a bit of glow in her face? That's the effect of a reflector (we used gold color). If you look close enough you will even see a reflection of a reflector in her eyes. In general, I think it is a very useful photography tool and I need to practice a lot more with it :-)

20th October 2006 will be the "National Cuddle Day" in Australia. I like the idea of it. According to its website, National Cuddle Day is a national call-to-arms. It's the day when cuddling is king and the handshake or peck-on-the-cheek is thrown out in favour of a big warm and friendly cuddle. You can even send a virtual hug from its website, which I already sent to my friend :-)

I have been posting lots of portraits here recently, part of the reason is because I love portrait and I shoot lots of it. For those who know me, you'd probably remember that before I got DSLR (Canon 350d) I used to took lots of landscape photos with very little portrait. Back then, my friends often ask "how come we never see any human being in those photos?" Good question. I think that's because it's very hard (for me) to shoot a nice portrait with "point & shoot camera." With DSLR, it allows me to use a lens that create a blur background (bokeh) easily. Thanks to my brother for the portraits tips.

Matt's wet hair

Another portrait of Matt. He adds a splash of water to his hair for a wet look. This shot was taken in my bedroom same time as Sammi's photo. I used ISO 1600 in this photo so you can probably notice a bit of noise (grain) even though I already used a noise reduction tool in Photoshop.

Gloria Jean's Coffees

Last Wednesday I went to downtown Brisbane and had a very nice ice chocolate drink (I think it's a macademia flavour) at Gloria Jean's Coffees. What a great drink! A bit strange though to have an ice drink in winter (for those who live in the northern hemisphere, it's winter right now in Australia!). Anyway, I haven't tried my new Canon 17-40L lens with food / product shot yet and I normally used Canon 50mm f1.8 with those kind of shots. So here it is, I zoom all the way to 40mm with f4 aperture. I'm quite happy with the bokeh (blur background) result :-)

A walk way connecting Brisbane Central train station and streets nearby. Captured with 17-40L. It's interesting that the left half of this photo (wall, steps, sign, and advertisement on the wall) is almost identical to the right half.

Security line, do not cross. When you see a yellow sign with a serious warning like this, would you cross? I think it's interesting to see a few people behind this sign. No, they didnt cross the line or anything, they just access the escalater from the other way around the corner :-)

About this photo: Captured with my new Canon 17-40L at Myer shopping center in Queens Street Mall in Brisbane. This shot was inspired by a photo with a title "do not cross" which was taken by Sam, who is a very famous photoblogger in Toronto. It was long time ago when I saw that photo for the first time. That time was even before I bought Canon 350d. Sam took many great photos by using his Canon 350d with 17-40L lens....which is why after using my Canon 350d (with kit lens) for 7 months I have decided to get the 17-40L....and now I'm very happy with this combination.

Australia Post

I took a train to Brisbane early Wednesday (yesterday) morning to test drive my new 17-40L. I took about 200 photos and I'm happy with half of that. I still need to practice more though. Canon 17-40L

Canon 17-40L just arrived from B&H store in New York City. I was so thrilled when I attach this lens to my Canon 350d body. The weight of this 17-40L is a lot heavier than I thought, but it gives a professional feeling. Besides, this is the first time I got the Canon's "L" lens :-)

About this photo: This is my first attempt with 17-40L. While this lens is great for landscape shots, it does not perform so good in a low light condition. Well, I'm not trying to write a review here coz I know you can find plenty of information on the internet. Anyway, it was raining a bit today so I still haven't got a chance to shoot outdoor. So here it is, a shot of the 17-40L box on my desk at home. All I did with this photo was cropping and adding USM. Hopefully the weather will be better soon so that I can test drive this L lens in Brisbane!

All in all, this lens will be a HUGE upgrade from my Canon kit lens 18-55mm. Thanks to my brother in USA who recommending this 17-40L.

"L" lens.....yeah !!!!

Four towers

Cityscape is one of my favourite types of photography. This shot here was taken a while ago in Brisbane by using my Canon kit lens (18-55mm). Some people said that they feel dizzy when looking at this photo. Some said their neck feel hurts by looking. One guy even said that this looks like a shot from a space rocket leaving the earth behind.

By the way, the weather is quite bad in Ipswich these days. There was a very heavy fog yesterday morning, and now today it was raining all day. Hope the weather will be better next week so that I can go out and shoot some new photos :-)

It's more like a photography trip though coz my friend and I are crazy about photography and we took lots and lots of photo there. What you are seeing now is a shot of Haigh's Chocolates, which is a very popular Chocolate shop in Adelaide, and in fact, Australia. A wall of photographic award at the Ipswich Art Gallery in Brisbane's western suburb. This photo was taken with my kit lens (18-55mm), same day as this photo. I have been using this lens for more than 6 months now and may be it's time to upgrade to the luxury Canon's 17-40L lens which provides far better color and sharpness :-)

Some of you may know that I'm crazy about the Simpsons cartoon. Just can't miss to watch it at 6pm on Channel 10 (Australia). I also bought "The Simpsons: A Complete Guide to Our Favourite Family". Basically, it's like an encyclopedia about The Simpsons. It also describes each character seen in this cartoon.

Did you know? Dan Castellaneta is the person who does a voice for: Homer Simpson, Grampa Simpson, Mayor Quimby, Itchy, Barney Gumble, Krusty the Clown, and 20 other characters in The Simpson Cartoon. By the way, have you visit The Simpsons's Official Website? It's fun, go on :-)

Mapo tofu

Mapo tofu. My friends and I had this for dinner last night at the Chinese restaurant. I love this dish and I also cooked Mapo tofu by myself before....it's so yummyyyyy :-)

According to Wikipedia, "...Mapo tofu is a popular Chinese dish from the Szechuan (Sichuan) province. It is a combination of tofu and meat, usually pork, in a slightly spicy bean-based sauce, sometimes with other ingredients such as water chestnuts, onions, or wood ear fungus. The name means "Pocked-Face Lady's Tofu", and is said to come from a (possibly fictional) food vendor by the name of Ma, who made and sold the dish."

By the way, today I had lunch at the Thai restaurant in Brisbane's China town today with Nana, Summer, and Matt. The restaurant's atmostphere is not as good as the one in South Bank but it's great to get together with friends :-)
